Overview

The problem Myla addresses is domestic violence. Domestic violence is a substantial issue in the United States and many other countries throughout the world. According to NCADV.org, in America, “1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence…”. The same source also states that “on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States.” Unfortunately, domestic violence became an even bigger issue during the pandemic, as cases increased significantly by 25-33 percent.

Myla aims to reduce the impact of this issue by sending an SMS to the victim's contact list or the police. When the sound level detected by the sensor exceeds a certain threshold, an SMS is sent to the user to check if this is a false alarm. If the user doesn't turn off the alarm in a certain amount of time, the contacts will receive a text alert.

Although the statistics mentioned above did inspire me to address this problem, when a domestic violence incident occurred in my hometown, it made me realize how prevalent this issue was. Two years ago, a student in my grade was forced to call the police when his mom was attacked by his stepfather. Unfortunately, his mother passed away in the hospital. I’ve never really forgotten about this incident, and this year I wanted to create this project so that no one would ever need to experience a situation such as this.
