Overview

1. Our program is an application developed for the Apple Watch that sends vibrational pulses based on a user’s current heart rate, which is monitored automatically on Apple Watches. Our app helps solve the problem of chronic stress by utilizing and delivering heart-beat-like tactile stimulation to a user’s wrist, which research has shown will create a significant calming effect on physiological stress.

2. The problem that we want to address in the world is chronic stress. Despite being months into acclimating to a new normal since the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans and people around the world are still struggling to cope with multiple sources of stress. 2 in 3 adults say they have experienced increased stress over the course of the pandemic, and recent studies have shown that teens have also reported being more stressed than ever.

3. We know what the detrimental and overwhelming effects of stress can do to people, particularly through our own experiences with ourselves and our peers in high school. Throughout our entire lives, we’ve always been taught ways to relieve stress, whether it be activities such as a workout, breathing exercises, or meditating — but they all take time away from a task that is trying to be completed. Albeit these stress relieving methods’ effectiveness, oftentimes they are not practical to do properly in any scenario. We knew that there had to be a better way to let someone subconsciously keep their stress levels in check without taking active time from their lives, which is how we decided to do more research on alternative stress relief methods.
