Overview

Cura, which means “cure” in Latin, aims to address the issue of Torticollis, a condition that can have particularly harmful effects. Torticollis is caused by abnormal neck twisting and can be acquired or congenital. If left untreated, it can lead to dangerous ailments such as spinal misalignment. The condition is relatively common, affecting one in 250 newborns, and 90% of people experience at least one episode.

Cura treats this condition with an earpiece that keeps track of the patient’s head tilt, alerting them if it goes beyond a particular value through a vibration motor and a mobile app that displays the patient’s progress over a week. The medical device improves the treatment process compared to the current methods of physical therapy and neck braces because it stretches the patient’s neck muscles for a more extended period and is far less bulky and noticeable than neck braces.

One of the significant motivators for building this invention was my connection to the condition, as I’ve had congenital torticollis ever since I was a toddler. Personally experiencing its adverse effects and the limitations of the current treatment plans motivated me to ideate and construct a far more effective medical device for the condition.
