Overview

How would you explain your program and how will your program spread a positive message, solve an important problem, or promote a healthy habit?

Our application is created for students with phones on them during the school day. With parental permission, students can input their schedule, set alarms/reminders, make a checklist of things to accomplish, and access daily quotes. Students will be restricted from their phones during scheduled class times and a notification will appear reminding students to focus. This will solve the common problem of students being on their phones too much during the school day. It will also promote a healthy lifestyle by limiting distractions, helping students focus on their work/grades, and building peer relationships through in-person communication.

What problem or issue in your community, Connecticut, the United States, or the world does your problem address?

Our application addresses the issue of kids using their phones too much throughout the school day, when they are supposed to be in class focusing on their work and getting good grades. In our middle school, phones are constantly being taken away and students are being distracted by games and social media. This app will block kids from using their phones when in scheduled classes, and if a student tries to use their phone while in class, they will get a notification that will say something like, “Stay focused, you got this!”

What inspired your team to address this problem/issue?

Our middle school has had a big issue with students using phones when they are not supposed to, for example in class and in the bathroom. Problems have arisen on social media and students have gotten distracted from their work. Now our school requires us to lock our phones up in a phone locker at the beginning of the day, and our morning meeting teachers will hand them back to us at the end of the day. We believe that this app can help students regulate their phone usage, and relieve schools/teachers from monitoring phones.
