Overview

1. Trash2Treasure uses an AI-driven website to encourage arts and crafts by upcycling trash into creative projects. Our AI, trashbot, generates ideas for users based on the materials they have, promoting the message of rethinking waste and the potential of AI in education. This not only fosters creativity but also addresses waste management issues by reducing landfill waste. We also installed a rethink waste sign made of upcycled materials at the Glastonbury waste management facility to create awareness.

2. In our community one of the big issues we have is trash management. In 2022, a trash processing facility closed in Hartford and now trash is delivered 1500 miles to a landfill in Ohio. We learned that this actually took funds from our town to transport all of this, which these funds could be used in other places. We wanted to make a positive impact and reduce the amount of waste polluting the landfills. Our goal is to give trash a second life, turning it into art. A Lot of people do not have access to money for materials, or inspiration for the exact arts and craft they would be motivated to create. This can help reduce pollution and help drive engagement in arts and craft. They have also voiced their concerns about the arts and crafts they find, it is either too difficult or too easy for them to accomplish. Our AI Trashbot can help find these specifics to cater arts and crafts to a user's needs. Waste management and a passion for arts and crafts are two solutions that this website can help solve.

3. The idea to convert waste into art emerged from exploring impactful community engagement opportunities. Our interactions with waste & art experts and insights into local waste management practices highlighted the financial and environmental costs of current trash disposal methods. This inspired our solution to not only reduce these costs but also to inspire creativity through accessible art-making.
