Overview
How would you explain your program and how will your program spread a positive message, solve an important problem, or promote a healthy habit?
The product I aim to create is a system that accurately detects alcohol in the environment of a driver’s seat and sends an alert to a contact list by checking people’s behaviors and informing them of their worsened condition.
What problem or issue in your community, Connecticut, the United States, or the world does your problem address?
I want to address the drunk driving problem. Every day, about 28 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes. The unfortunate reality is that these deaths were preventable and are the result of poor decision-making. Usually, people are aware that they have been drinking, however, they misjudge just how impaired they are when they choose to drive. Additionally, people can be too embarrassed to admit that they are too drunk to drive to their parents or friends. Sometimes people have driven while under the influence and have not been caught and this may provide a sense of security that emboldens them to drive the next time they do drink because they have done it in the past.
What inspired your team to address this problem/issue?
Initially, the idea for my project started when my health class was having a class discussion about the harmful effects of drinking and driving. Generally, there is worsened judgment when people get behind the wheel. Usually, people are aware that they have been drinking, however, they misjudge just how impaired they are. People can often be too embarrassed to admit that they are too drunk to drive or that they need help from either their parents or friends. Sometimes people have driven while under the influence and have not been caught and this may provide a sense of security that emboldens them to drive the next time they drink because they have done it in the past.
